An East Africa safari is one of the most breathtaking travel experiences in the world. But Tanzania and Kenya also require some of the most thorough travel health preparation of any destination. At Imagine Health Pharmacy & Travel Clinic in SW Calgary, we help Calgary safari-goers prepare for the Serengeti, Maasai Mara, Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar every season. Here's your complete health guide.
Yellow Fever: Requirements and Recommendations
Yellow Fever is the most critical vaccination consideration for East Africa:
- Tanzania requires proof of Yellow Fever vaccination if you are arriving from a Yellow Fever endemic country. This includes many travellers doing multi-destination trips through Africa or South America.
- Kenya has similar requirements. If your itinerary includes Uganda, Rwanda, or the DRC before Kenya, you will need your Yellow Card (International Certificate of Vaccination).
- Even when not officially required, Yellow Fever vaccination is strongly recommended for all travellers to sub-Saharan Africa, as the disease is present in the region.
Imagine Health Pharmacy is a designated Yellow Fever vaccination centre in SW Calgary — we can administer the vaccine and issue your official International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP), the Yellow Card recognized at international borders.
Malaria Prevention: Essential for East Africa
Both Tanzania and Kenya have active malaria transmission, including in popular safari areas like the Serengeti, Amboseli, and coastal regions like Mombasa and Zanzibar. Malaria prevention is not optional for these destinations.
Our travel pharmacists will assess your specific itinerary and recommend the right anti-malarial medication for you. Common options include:
- Atovaquone/Proguanil (Malarone) — taken daily starting 1–2 days before travel, well-tolerated, and can be stopped 7 days after leaving the malaria zone
- Doxycycline — a cost-effective daily option; also offers some protection against certain bacterial infections
- Mefloquine (Lariam) — taken weekly; suitable for longer trips but requires starting 2–3 weeks before departure
Beyond medication, mosquito bite prevention is critical: permethrin-treated clothing, DEET repellent (30%+), long sleeves and pants at dusk, and mosquito nets in accommodations.
Other Recommended Vaccines for Tanzania and Kenya
Beyond Yellow Fever and malaria, our Calgary travel pharmacists typically recommend:
- Hepatitis A — essential for all travellers; risk from food and water throughout East Africa
- Typhoid — strongly recommended, especially for adventurous eaters or budget travellers
- Hepatitis B — important if you may need medical care, have injuries, or interact closely with locals
- Rabies (pre-exposure) — highly recommended for safari-goers; wildlife contact is possible, and post-exposure treatment is not readily available in remote areas
- Meningococcal — recommended for certain regions of Kenya and Tanzania, particularly during dry season
- Routine vaccines — MMR, Td/Tdap, flu — confirmed up to date
Altitude and Other Safari Health Considerations
If you're climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, altitude sickness (AMS) is a serious consideration. We can prescribe Acetazolamide (Diamox) as prophylaxis and discuss acclimatization strategies. We'll also cover traveller's diarrhea prevention, safe food and water practices, and sun and heat protection specific to equatorial East Africa.
Start Your Safari Preparation in SW Calgary
East Africa requires more advance preparation than most destinations. We recommend booking your appointment at Imagine Health Pharmacy at least 8 weeks before departure — and sooner if you're climbing Kilimanjaro or doing a multi-country trip.
