HONDURAS TRAVEL HEALTH FAQ

Common Questions About Traveling to Honduras

Yes — Hepatitis A and Typhoid are still recommended even for resort stays on Roatan. While the island is generally safe with good infrastructure, contamination can occur anywhere. If you plan to visit the mainland for excursions to Copan or other sites, additional precautions may be needed.

No — Roatan, Utila, Guanaja, and the Bay Islands have no malaria risk. Major cities like Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula are also malaria-free. Antimalarials are only needed if visiting rural mainland areas, particularly in Gracias a Dios or eastern lowlands.

Dengue and Zika are present throughout Honduras, including Roatan and urban areas. These mosquito-borne diseases have no vaccine for travelers, so prevention focuses on avoiding mosquito bites. Use DEET repellent, wear long sleeves, and sleep in screened or air-conditioned rooms. Pregnant women should avoid travel due to Zika risks.

Consider it if you'll spend significant time in rural areas or have potential animal contact. The Copan area has stray dogs and wildlife. Rabies vaccine is especially important if medical care is more than a few hours away, as post-exposure treatment must start quickly.

Ideally 4-6 weeks before travel, but don't skip your appointment if you're leaving sooner. Hepatitis A provides protection within 2 weeks, and we can still help with other vaccines and health advice even at the last minute.

We recommend: DEET insect repellent (20%+), SPF 30+ sunscreen, oral rehydration salts, anti-diarrheal medication (Imodium), pain relievers, hand sanitizer, reef-safe sunscreen for diving, and any prescription medications with extra supply. We'll provide a complete checklist during your consultation.
