Thailand Travel Vaccines: Preparing for Southeast Asia from Calgary

Thailand is one of the world's most iconic travel destinations — temples, islands, street food, elephant sanctuaries, and vibrant cities. It's also a destination that requires thoughtful travel health preparation. At Imagine Health Pharmacy & Travel Clinic in SW Calgary, we help Calgarians plan for Thailand and the broader Southeast Asia region every month. Here's your complete 2026 guide.

Core Vaccines Recommended for Thailand

The Government of Canada and our Calgary travel pharmacists recommend the following as a baseline for all Thailand travellers:

  • Hepatitis A — Essential for Thailand. Street food — one of the great joys of travelling in Thailand — also carries risk of Hepatitis A from contaminated food handling. One dose before travel provides immediate protection.
  • Typhoid — Strongly recommended, particularly for travellers planning to eat street food, visit rural areas, or travel for 2+ weeks. The injectable vaccine is most commonly used.
  • Hepatitis B — Recommended for most travellers; important given the relatively high prevalence of Hep B in Southeast Asia and the likelihood of needing medical or dental care.
  • Routine Vaccines — MMR (measles is still a risk in SE Asia), Td/Tdap, flu, and COVID-19 boosters should all be current.

Japanese Encephalitis: Who Needs It?

Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito-borne viral brain infection endemic in rural Southeast Asia. For Thailand specifically:

  • Risk is highest in rural rice-farming areas, particularly during and after monsoon season
  • Travellers spending most of their time in Bangkok, Chiang Mai city, or beach resorts (Phuket, Koh Samui) have lower risk
  • JE vaccine (Ixiaro) is recommended for travellers spending 30+ days in SE Asia, or any time in rural areas
  • The vaccine requires 2 doses spaced 28 days apart — plan ahead

Our pharmacists will assess your specific Thailand itinerary and determine whether JE vaccine is recommended for you.

Malaria and Dengue in Thailand

Malaria risk in Thailand is limited. The main risk areas are forested border regions — particularly near Myanmar (northwest Thailand) and Cambodia (east). Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and most beach destinations are considered malaria-free.

Dengue fever is common throughout Thailand, including in cities and popular tourist areas. It's transmitted by day-biting mosquitoes. Prevention includes:

  • DEET-based repellent (30%+) during daylight hours
  • Long sleeves and pants in the early morning and late afternoon
  • Staying in accommodations with air conditioning or screened windows

Rabies in Thailand

Thailand has one of the highest rates of rabies in Asia. Dogs are everywhere — many friendly, some feral — and monkey populations at temples can be aggressive. Pre-exposure rabies vaccination is strongly recommended for:

  • Travellers staying 4+ weeks
  • Anyone doing outdoor activities or visiting rural areas
  • Backpackers with limited access to immediate medical care
  • Travellers also visiting Cambodia or Vietnam on the same trip

Other Travel Health Tips for Thailand

  • Use only bottled water — even in upscale restaurants
  • Be cautious with ice in drinks unless from a sealed source
  • Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen daily — UV intensity in Thailand is extreme year-round
  • Pack a comprehensive traveller's diarrhea kit — ask our pharmacists for a prescription
