The Dominican Republic is one of Canada's most popular winter escape destinations — and for good reason. Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, and La Romana offer world-class all-inclusive resorts just a few hours from Calgary. But even when you're staying at a five-star resort, travel vaccines matter. Here's what Imagine Health Pharmacy & Travel Clinic in SW Calgary recommends for Canadians heading to the DR.
Do You Need Vaccines for an All-Inclusive in the Dominican Republic?
This is the most common misconception we address at our Calgary travel clinic. Many travellers assume that staying at a resort means they're fully protected from food and waterborne illness. Unfortunately, that's not entirely true. Hepatitis A outbreaks have occurred at Caribbean resorts, and Typhoid is present throughout the Dominican Republic. The good news: a simple vaccine before you leave provides excellent protection.
The Dominican Republic does not require any vaccinations for entry for most travellers. But the Government of Canada recommends several vaccines regardless of where you're staying.
Recommended Vaccines for Dominican Republic Travellers
- Hepatitis A — The #1 recommended vaccine for the Caribbean. Transmitted through contaminated food and water, one dose before travel provides immediate protection. This is a must-have for all Dominican Republic travellers.
- Typhoid — Recommended especially if you're eating outside the resort, visiting local restaurants or markets, or travelling to rural areas.
- Hepatitis B — Recommended for anyone who may need medical or dental care abroad, or who has close personal contact with locals.
- Routine Vaccines — MMR, Tdap, and flu should all be current before any international travel.
- Cholera — The Dominican Republic has had cholera outbreaks. Oral cholera vaccine (Dukoral) may be recommended for higher-risk travellers or those going off-resort.
What About Malaria and Dengue?
The Dominican Republic is one of the few Caribbean islands where malaria is still present — specifically in rural and agricultural areas, particularly in the western provinces near Haiti. Risk is generally low for resort-based travellers in Punta Cana or Puerto Plata, but our pharmacists will assess your specific itinerary.
Dengue fever is also found throughout the Dominican Republic and is transmitted by day-biting mosquitoes. Insect repellent with DEET (30%+) is essential, even at resorts.
Tips for Staying Healthy at Your DR Resort
- Stick to bottled or purified water — even at all-inclusives, use bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth
- Avoid ice if its origin is unclear
- Be cautious with raw fruits and vegetables washed in tap water
- Use insect repellent — dengue-carrying mosquitoes are most active during daylight hours
- Pack a traveller's diarrhea kit (ask our pharmacists about Azithromycin and electrolytes)
