Back-to-School Immunizations: What Calgary Parents Need to Know

As summer winds down, back-to-school prep is not just about backpacks and supplies. Making sure your children's immunizations are up to date is one of the most important things you can do before the school year starts.

Recommended School-Age Vaccines

  • DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) — booster doses typically due at ages 4-6 and again as a teen
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) — two doses before school entry
  • Varicella (Chickenpox) — two doses recommended
  • HPV — recommended starting at age 9-12, covered by Alberta Health for Grade 6 students
  • Meningococcal — recommended for adolescents
  • Annual Flu Shot — free for all Albertans aged 6 months+
