India Travel Vaccines: A Complete Calgary Guide (2026)

India is one of the world's most extraordinary travel destinations — and one of the most complex from a travel health perspective. Whether you're visiting family in Punjab, backpacking through Rajasthan, doing a spiritual journey in Varanasi, or combining business with a Goa beach trip, the health preparation matters. Imagine Health Pharmacy & Travel Clinic in SW Calgary builds personalized India travel health plans for Calgarians of all backgrounds.

Essential Vaccines for India (All Travellers)

Regardless of where in India you're going or how long you'll be there, the following vaccines are recommended by the Government of Canada and our travel pharmacists:

  • Hepatitis A — Universally recommended for India. Food and waterborne disease is common across all regions, including in major cities. Even visiting family in India — where food is home-cooked — carries risk.
  • Typhoid — Strongly recommended for all travellers to India. Typhoid fever is common, and antibiotic-resistant strains are increasingly reported from the subcontinent. The injectable Typhim Vi vaccine provides 3 years of protection.
  • Hepatitis B — Recommended for all travellers; especially important given the potential need for medical care or dental work while abroad.
  • Routine vaccines — Ensure MMR, Td/Tdap, flu, and COVID-19 are current.

Additional Vaccines to Discuss With Your Travel Pharmacist

Depending on your specific itinerary, activities, and duration of travel, our Calgary pharmacists may also recommend:

  • Japanese Encephalitis — Recommended for travellers spending 30+ days in rural India, particularly during and after monsoon season (June–October). Required for some rural regions even on shorter trips.
  • Rabies (pre-exposure) — Dogs, monkeys, and bats are common in India and rabies is endemic. Pre-exposure vaccination is strongly recommended — post-exposure immune globulin is often unavailable in rural areas.
  • Cholera (Dukoral) — Oral vaccine that also provides some protection against E. coli traveller's diarrhea. Useful for longer-stay travellers or those visiting areas with cholera risk.
  • Meningococcal — For travellers to certain pilgrimage sites or attending large gatherings.

Malaria in India: Do You Need Anti-Malarials?

Malaria is present in most parts of India, though risk varies significantly by region, season, and urban vs. rural setting. Key points:

  • Major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore have low malaria risk for short-stay travellers
  • Rural areas, jungle regions (Goa forests, northeastern India, Rajasthan border areas) carry higher risk
  • Monsoon and post-monsoon season (July–November) sees peak mosquito activity
  • India has both P. vivax and P. falciparum malaria — the more dangerous falciparum strain requires careful medication selection

Our travel pharmacists will assess your India itinerary in detail and determine whether Malarone, doxycycline, or another anti-malarial is appropriate.

Traveller's Diarrhea: The Most Common India Travel Illness

Traveller's diarrhea affects a significant proportion of visitors to India — even careful travellers. We recommend packing a self-treatment kit including an antibiotic (Azithromycin or Ciprofloxacin), Imodium for symptom relief, and oral rehydration salts. Our pharmacists will prescribe and counsel you on how and when to use these.

How Far in Advance Should You Book?

For India, we recommend booking at Imagine Health Pharmacy in SW Calgary at least 6–8 weeks before departure. Japanese Encephalitis vaccine requires two doses spaced 28 days apart. Rabies requires 3 doses. The earlier you come in, the more complete your protection. Learn more on our India travel health destination page.
