Managing Your Medications in Winter: Cold Weather Tips from Our Pharmacists
Imagine Health Team·Pharmacist, Imagine Health Pharmacy·January 31, 2026
Calgary winters are beautiful but harsh — and the cold can affect your medications in ways you might not expect. Here are important winter tips from the pharmacy team at Imagine Health.
Medications That Are Affected by Cold
- Insulin — freezes below 0°C and becomes ineffective. Never leave insulin in your car overnight.
- Blood pressure medications — cold weather constricts blood vessels, which may affect how well your medication controls your blood pressure. Talk to your pharmacist if readings change.
- Asthma inhalers — cold, dry air triggers asthma. Keep your rescue inhaler warm (inner pocket, not outer) and use a scarf over your mouth when outside.
- Liquid medications — can freeze or separate in cold temperatures. Store at room temperature.
