Shingles Vaccine: Why Adults Over 50 Should Talk to Their Pharmacist

If you have ever had chickenpox, the virus that caused it — varicella-zoster — stays dormant in your body. For about 1 in 3 Canadians, it reactivates later in life as shingles (herpes zoster), causing a painful, blistering rash that can last weeks and sometimes leads to long-term nerve pain.

Who Should Get the Shingles Vaccine?

  • Adults aged 50 and older — risk increases with age
  • Adults aged 18+ who are immunocompromised
  • Anyone who has had shingles before — it can recur

About Shingrix

Shingrix is the recommended shingles vaccine in Canada. It is given as two doses, 2 to 6 months apart, and is over 90% effective at preventing shingles and its complications.

Cost and Coverage

Shingrix is not covered by the Alberta government for most adults, but many private insurance plans cover it. The out-of-pocket cost is approximately $150-$180 per dose. Our team can help you check your coverage.
